STURGIS — Retired broadcaster, rodeo announcer and Ward 3 councilor Jim Thompson has been selected as Grand Marshal of the Days of ’76 parade in Deadwood the 24th and 25th of July, Friday and Saturday.
Days of ’76 committee member Tedd Thompson (no relation) said this was a no brainer. “He’s just been so involved with the Days of ’76 as rodeo and parade announcer, and promotes stand alone roping,” he said.
Thompson added once Jim’s name came up no one else was considered. Jim is grateful for the honor and said he was surprised, to be sure.
“I was playing poker and had a great hand, but I knew I had to answer when I saw it was Tedd,” he said. Jim is also grateful his wife can be a part of this as well.
Jim still does some occasional announcing so Meade County News asked him why. “I’m still living. This is the 250th birthday of the United States and it has some meaning to me. Besides, I’m all about giving back,” he said. What he means by giving back is to offer advice and input to the next generation of announcers so they can keep the Old West traditions alive.
As for the honor? “I’ve been part of the Days of ’76 for 50 years. I feel like I’m passing the torch,” said Jim.
