STURGIS The annual Alliance of Churches chili and soup cookoff is a way to beat the cold and raise some money for the organization.
St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church,St. Thomas Episcopal Church,Sturgis Christian Church,First Presbyterian Church,Grace Lutheran Church,Action for the Betterment of the Community and New Dawn and Sturgis United Methodist Church all had entries of chili and soup.
Grilled cheese sandwiches and root beer floats were also available.
Alliance of Churches Secretary Deb Looby stated this helps out a lot.
“This all goes to benefit the community and needs of the people like groceries and gas and motel rooms,” she said.
Last year the Alliance gave out about $25,000 in vouchers to those in need, in gas and utilities and groceries.
She added the community has really supported the group.
