STURGIS- Reserve officers with the Sturgis Police Department went through the paces of the Honor Challenge,to remember Deputy Katherine Frank of the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, who died in the line of duty October 12.

Sergeant Dylan Schmidt of the Sturgis PD explained what the challenge is.

“The officers do an 800 meter run, squat thrusts and related exercises to test their stamina.

They get an idea of what they can achieve when it comes to strength and endurance,” he said.

Officer  Kimball timed the reservists and encouraged them to keep going. Sergeant Schmidt added some will find out being a reserve is not for them and this is a very good way to find out.

We asked the reserve officers why they joined the force and it was a mixed bag, some wanting to serve the community while others want to eventually become a police officer. There were several veterans among the group who like the atmosphere.

“This is a great way to hopefully create a pool to dip into when we’re looking for additional officers,” said Schmidt.
