Full Mill Levy Is Discussed

STURGIS — At the Meade 46-1 school board meeting May 11 Superintendent Wayne Wormstadt stated that having a lower mill levy relative to property taxes is something that needs to be looked at.
He spoke of it at the school board meeting May 11.

He began by saying reliance on a transaction tax could be problematic.

“If this state has a bad year with sales tax collections it will have an impact on possible revenue,” he said.

Wormstadt added that for the last two years the board has left $1.,5 million on the table, the last two years that they’ve under levied and about $3.1 million for the last five years.

He said it may be time for the board to levy the full amount for possibly the next two or three years moving forward.

Meade 46-1 is the only AA school district that doesn’t have an opt out or a bond referendum and doesn’t levy the maximum for capital outlay or a combination of that.

Member Thomas Schneller said that this was his last meeting but he wanted to return to what Wormstadt said and the levy is crucial.

“If we’re going to be fighting for our kids and supporting our teachers we need to do it 100 percent. I don’t understand why we’ve been under levying. Maybe it’s what people say but every time I hear that I just feel we’re under supporting our staff and kids ,” he said. We should note this was just a discussion.
