The Sturgis city council approved renaming Sturgis Downhill Bike Park in honor of the late Mayor Kevin Forrester at its meeting June 1.
City Administrator Aaron Jordan explained.
“We all know Kevin Forrester was an avid biker and really liked the Sturgis Downhill Bike Park. So it’s fitting that we name the park in honor of him. This isn’t a park for horses or even for walking. It’s for riding your bike,” he said.
Ward 3 councilor Jim Thompson expressed that he’s always felt that a site should be named what it is, not after a person but if this is what the council wanted, he was on board.
Ward 2 councilor Ruth Nichols made the motion to approve the name change and Ward 3 councilor Mark Chaplin seconded it. The motion passed unanimously.
